The Power of the Talisman
Collective Understanding
The art of jewellery is a universal language. From prehistoric times, it has been created, worn, gifted, and cherished across cultures for centuries. On the surface, jewellery might appear to be an act of vanity or self-indulgence - but at its heart, it carries profound meaning. Throughout history, it has symbolised guidance, status, worship, protection, healing, intention - and more. From ancient amulets believed to ward off evil, to modern-day charms that inspire confidence, jewellery has always held a quiet kind of magic.
I’ve been drawn to jewellery and body adornment for as long as I can remember, fascinated by how humans use metal, stone, and symbol to reflect their inner worlds. Why does a simple object worn on the body carry such weight? What stories does it hold? These questions continue to inspire me.
Through the Ages
Jewellery has always meant more than beauty - it has served as a spiritual and cultural anchor across time. Even close to home here in England, amulets were integral to daily life in Anglo-Saxon times. Archaeological discoveries reveal that amber beads, jet pendants, and quartz pebbles were worn for protection and healing, often buried with the deceased to offer guidance into the afterlife.
In later British folklore, natural objects like hazelnuts were pierced and worn as charms to ward off ailments like toothache and rheumatism—underscoring a belief in the power of nature to heal and protect. One of my favourite historical pieces (thought its authenticity has not been confirmed) is housed at the British Museum - a leather necklace (once referred to as a witch’s wreath) holding 12 talismans—believed to protect against curses. These small objects tell big stories, and they speak of the human need to feel safe, seen, and spiritually held.
Emeleven Talismans
Hi I’m Em and I am a Collector of Things - anything can hold meaning for me and I’m always on the hunt for little treasures; a pretty stone found on a quiet dog walk, a feather that drifted past me whilst I was journalling, that beer bottle cap from our first date. At Emeleven, I consider each piece a talisman - a wearable reminder of strength, growth, and connection. For me, jewellery isn’t just an accessory. It’s a power-tool for the soul.
A talisman works on a deeply personal level. It’s something you reach for when you need grounding, when you want to honour your intentions, or when you’re celebrating a milestone. It might be a reminder of where you’ve been - or a vision of where you’re headed.
When you wear a pendant shaped like a flame, it’s more than a design - it’s perhaps a symbol of the fire within you. A cloud-shaped ring could act as a little nudge to keep dreaming. A piece adorned with healing plants could remind you to tend to yourself gently, and turn to nature when you need support. Your meaning may differ from mine - and that’s the beauty of it. Jewellery becomes part of your personal mythology.
I find peace in weaving together ancient symbols, intuition, and the quiet whisper of the divine feminine. Each piece, for me, is a vessel. Each piece invites you to reconnect with your inner goddess - whether you’re seeking luck, healing, growth, or simply a moment of mindful reflection.
So next time you clasp a necklace or slip on a ring, pause and ask yourself with these journal prompts:
What story is it telling?
What energy does it hold?
In the world of talismans, every object carries intention. Every detail becomes a reflection of your light. And maybe, just maybe, the most powerful magic has been with you all along.
Keep shining,
